Fr. Mike Barry lives in Oak Hills (California), where he is president of Mary's Mercy Center. A new project (Mary's Village) is being set up to help homeless people in San Bernardino. In this article Fr. Mike invites us to "dig wells", to go to the sources of our SS.CC spirituality. 

The recent General Chapter had the theme of ‘Know Your Inner Self.’ It is with that sense in mind that I reflect on our charism. Do we know our charism as SS.CC. in the 21st century? In the book of Genesis Isaac digs again the wells of his father Abraham (Gen. 26, 12-33) It was a common ploy of the enemy to destroy the wells so that the army would be deprived of water. They would throw dirt or dead animals into the well thus rendering the water undrinkable. So it was always necessary to re-dig the wells. The five wells of Isaac were: Jealousy; Arguments (strife); Accusation; Room Enough; Restoration. When we examine our history, as short as it is, there is little doubt that we have experienced the first three wells in bitter struggles and argumentation. Now it is time to re-dig our foundations and live a new quality of SS.CC. life for our present century. Examine our foundational roots. We came to be amidst the turmoil, death and strife of the French Revolution. We brought the love in the heart of our creator to bear upon the scene and were blessed and successful. Then we experienced strife, argumentation and division. Do these still bear burdens upon us? Are we free of them? Sure they are part of our history. Are we to be ruled by our history or learn from it? (Thomas Carlyle)

In Acts 4 we read that the disciples had four basic elements which were the breaking of bread (Eucharist), the word of God, the teaching of the Apostles and the community. While we have those four as foundational, we as SS.CC. have our own teachings. We have our charism which embodies God’s love, not our love for Him but His love in us. Then we have His reparation and adoration. Mary (over 1600 apparitions; 53 approved) too is in our charism model. Keeping these thoughts in mind it is time to re-dig the wells of our foundation and modernize them to an effective quality SS.CC. life, ministry and community.

El reciente Capítulo general tuvo el tema "Conozca su hombre interior". Con ese sentido en mente, reflexiono sobre nuestro carisma. ¿Conocemos nuestro carisma SSCC en el siglo XXI? En el libro de Génesis, Isaac cava de nuevo los pozos de su padre Abraham (Gen 26, 12-33). Era una táctica común del enemigo destruir los pozos para que el ejército se viera privado de agua. Tirarían tierra o animales muertos al pozo, lo que haría que el agua no se pudiera beber. Así que siempre fue necesario volver a cavar los pozos. Los cinco pozos de Isaac fueron: los celos; contiendas; acusación; suficiente espacio; restauración. Cuando examinamos nuestra historia, tan breve como es, hay pocas dudas de que hemos experimentado los primeros tres pozos en amargas luchas y discusiones. Ahora es el momento de volver a excavar nuestras bases y vivir una nueva calidad de ser SS.CC. La vida para nuestro siglo presente.

Examinar nuestras raíces fundamentales. Llegamos a estar en medio de la agitación, la muerte y la lucha de la Revolución Francesa. Trajimos el amor en el corazón de nuestro creador para enfrentar la escena y fuimos bendecidos y exitosos. Entonces experimentamos contienda, argumentación y división. ¿Siguen estas cargas sobre nosotros? ¿Estamos libres de ello? Claro que son parte de nuestra historia. “¿Debemos ser gobernados por nuestra historia o aprender de ella?” (Thomas Carlyle).

En Hechos 4 leemos que los discípulos tenían cuatro elementos básicos que eran el partir el pan (Eucaristía), la Palabra de Dios, la enseñanza de los apóstoles y la comunidad. Si bien tenemos esos cuatro como fundamentos, nosotros como SS.CC. tenemos nuestras propias enseñanzas. Tenemos nuestro carisma que encarna el amor de Dios, no nuestro amor por Él, sino su amor en nosotros. Entonces tenemos su reparación y adoración. María (más de 1600 apariciones; 53 aprobadas) también está en nuestro modelo de carisma. Teniendo en cuenta estos pensamientos, es hora de volver a cavar los pozos de nuestra fundación y modernizarlos en una calidad efectiva SS.CC.: vida, ministerio y comunidad.
